Umi Says...

"shine your light on the world. Shine your light so the world can see...I ain't no perfect man I'm trying to do the best that I can." ~Mos Def

On one of the forums I frequent I came across this question.

Do you guys think that too much praise prevents an artist, intellectual, spiritual leader, etc. from reaching their true potential? Imagine how far someone would go if there wasn't anyone there to say you've done better than most people or all people that have tried it before. Or is it the opposite? Do we need praise to go further?

I think there is a delicate balance that is necessary to not only motivate through acknowledgement and praise, but not so much as to instigate laziness and pride.

I myself am a person that doesn't require constant stroking but it is nice to be recognized every once and a while. As a mother most of my efforts are silent. And I wouldn't have it any other way, that's how it works. At times I am frustrated with my inability to put myself out in the world at the level that I believe would be beneficial both financially and recognition wise, though I have made efforts more recently to get out of that mode of thinking. I know at times I am my own worse enemy. But the hunger is what drives my creativity, and feeds my honest originality. For I believe I have not yet been tainted by the need to appease an audience for mostly a monetary reason. It keeps me exploring the possibilities as well as experimenting. I am left without barriers and limitations, some form of freedom. But there are too times that it is disheartening to have so much to express to the world but to feel invisible. So that little bit of recognition is a good thing but should be avoided in excess for the creative process with suffer with dullness.

I am so thankful that I can keep my innervisions before my eyes...all of them...lol.
Even more thankful when my route, however sidewinding and complex, is affirmed.

So this

is a wonderful thing. Not only to me but the other photographers that are showcased.
