Talkin' *ISH
Why everytime I hear when doves cry or any song off the Purple Rain Soundtrack I am automatically transferred back in time to the summer I was 13! Damn I still love that album...oops CD.
I decided yesterday I was gonna talk smack about a topic I was parlez'in with my peeps
Sincere about yesterday on the IM.
My pet peeve "fake @$$ deep folk"
aka
PP's = Pretentious People or Plastic People (originating term I've been using since '93 incessantly)
Well the topic started with with discussing Ms. Badu. *sigh* Now I'm simplifying the conversation but we got on to PP's and how they get down. First I have found that PP's are thoroughly confused most of the time but fail to either acknowledge or admit to themselves as such. They end up putting up an almost convincing front of some sort of righteousness. Usually whatever is in style or the trend of social behavior at the moment. Now Ms. Badu (a PP as far as I'm concerned, though I still listen to her music..SO WHAT!) just named her new baby girl Puma *cringe*. And the topic got on to her different phases and fronts and their effect of a lot of sistah's mirrored behaviors. First it was the wrap the size of the empire state building, here's the ancient kemitic knowledge that I'm here to bless you with stuff. Ok I do appreciate the fact that AT THE TIME wearing a gale became socially acceptable to the main stream. I do appreciate the fact that more sistah were becoming (what I thought) more conscious and afrocentric. BUT then was that fake dreadlock ish she came with on her next album (which was amazing really)? Lawd now she was on some country, 70ish, kinda rasta ish...and where did Kemit go. Oh then she became a 5%. Lawdy lawdy. Then just when I think she has come to her senses and shaved her head...she goes into black power, thick 70's, frustrated artist mode with the afro wig. Geez. Now I believe in transformation and change but damn.
So then the discussion goes on to the sistahs that followed Badu and her trends so to speak. Sincere pointed out they were right along with Ms. Badu and her head wraps...now they are deaf poetess'. Did that whole lil afrocentric movement turn into a bunch of tryin'-to-be-Nikki-Gioavanni's? Now I know I'm not alone in this? I know there are righteous posers out there. I do believe that some will evolve and fine tune their beliefs, maybe stand firm by them with age. And others are just waiting to get booted off the bandwagon and will jump on the next. I wish these folks would learn that you can tied it all together rather just discarding the experience.
Whatever it AIN'T that deep!
twah.
